The parties wrapped up their conventions on 5 August, officially registering thirteen contenders for the Presidency of Brazil in 2026. Their names entered the electronic ballot system ahead of the first round slated for 4 October, with a possible runoff on 25 October.
Incumbent eyes a fourth term
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva of the Workers’ Party announced his bid for re‑election. The former metalworker from Caetés (PE) served as head of state from 2003 to 2010 and is currently completing a third term (2023‑2026). After the Supreme Court overturned his earlier convictions, he returned to win the 2022 vote against the former president.
His campaign will likely stress the social programs launched during his prior administrations, while opponents question the sustainability of public finances. Lula’s age, now in his early 80s, also draws attention as a factor in voter calculations.
Opposition field expands
Former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) will not run, being incarcerated on a 27‑year sentence for an alleged coup attempt and therefore barred from office. The party positioned his son, Flávio Bolsonaro, a senator from Rio de Janeiro, as the standard‑bearer for the legacy.

Flávio’s candidacy prompted Tarcísio de Freitas, governor of São Paulo and market favorite, to abandon a presidential bid and focus on retaining his state’s top post. The move changed the center‑right arena ahead of the vote.
Within the centrist Social Democratic Party, Ronaldo Caiado emerged as the official nominee after Ratinho Júnior withdrew his exploratory run. Caiado, a longtime senator and former governor of Goiás, brings agricultural and rural union ties to his platform.
Other aspirants include Clariana Barão, a lawyer heading the state branch of the Christian Democratic Party, and Edmilson Costa, a PhD economist backed by the Communist Party, who proposes sweeping institutional reforms such as a unicameral legislature.
Veterinarian Wilson Grassi (Democrata) is among the registered candidates for the 2026 presidential election.

Psychiatrist‑author Augusto Cury (age 67) leverages his bestseller status, promising a “human‑centered” approach to governance. He previously gained national attention for his self‑help books.
Compared with the 2022 lineup, the 2026 field shows a broader spectrum of professional backgrounds, from academia to entertainment. While the incumbent retains a strong foothold, the opposition’s fragmentation may echo the divided vote that propelled Lula back to power four years ago.
